Team Plan – Transforming Tech Science

Members: Akarsh, George, Ben, Dylan

Selected Text: http://www.news.gatech.edu/features/humans-mars

Ideas:

  • Songs (4 songs ~4mins each)
  • Posterboard
  • Talkshow
  • Carpool KaraokePlay
  • Podcast with songs and a band interview

We have decided to transform an electronic article/website into a podcast. This podcast will include a talk show that has elements of an interview between a host and a band that performs songs.

The Rhetorical Situation of the Original Text

Genre: Website

Medium: Digital

Purpose – The purpose of the website/article and it’s accompanying videos is to provide excitement and popularity for NASA’s mission to Mars.

Audience – Anyone with a slight interest in space travel, NASA, or the Universe and who has the means to access the website/media.

Context – In a study led by PhD Candidate Lujendra Ojha, the most convincing evidence yet that there is flowing liquid water had been discovered on Mars. This has prompted serious consideration for a manned mission to Mars.

Our Transformed Text:

Genre: Interview/vocal

Medium: Podcast/”radio”

Purpose – The purpose of our Podcast is to reach a wider audience while maintaining the overall purpose of the original text.

Audience – Anyone with a slight interest in space travel, NASA, or the Universe. Anyone who does not have the time to sit down and read an article. People who might not come across the website, people who can’t read/don’t want to read.

Context – Space travel is a new big thing, SpaceX, Blue Origin, and new movies like Interstellar, Gravity, The Martian, and others have been increasing public awareness of the future and what we can/will be able to accomplish.

Implications – Learning that there intermittently exists liquid flowing water on Mars is groundbreaking information because the implications of these observations allow space programs to solidify their arguments to get funding for manned missions to Mars and other planetoid bodies in the universe that harbor the building blocks for life. To the regular Joe, this new information we have about Mars should give them hope that one day humans might be able to inhabit other planets.

Individual Responsibilities:

Akarsh: Read the website in its entirety and watch the accompanying videos (in-class 9/28). Find song to Parody/use as “my” original song (it’s not actually my intellectual property) about space/mars related to Martian Politics: will it be a worldwide effort? and Can science fiction become reality? sections of the website.

George: Acquaint self with full original text (in-class 9/28); Interview questions related to the original text (9/29). Play the host of the talkshow. Open and enchant the audience.

Ben: Acquaint self with full original text (in-class 9/28); Find song to Parody/use as “my” original song (it’s not actually my intellectual property) about space/mars related to “Why should humans go to Mars?” and the “How do you find life on Mars?” sections of the website and we have to have a paragraph or two to say about those sections/the song, describing them and giving basic information (9/29).

Dylan: Read the website in its entirety and watch the accompanying videos (in-class 9/28). Find song to Parody/use as “my” original song (it’s not actually my intellectual property) about space/mars related to When will we make the trip? and Where on the surface would we land? sections of the website. Include one or two  paragraphs, giving basic information and a description of the sections/song (9/29).
